A stunning castle ruin park with beautiful stone walls and moats seemingly floating on water! In spring, it explodes with cherry blossoms, offering breathtaking views where history and nature merge.
Oita Castle Ruins Park is located in the heart of Oita City, occupying the former site of Funai Castle, the former residence of the Bungofunai clan. Construction began in 1597 (Keichō 2) under Fukuhara Naotaka, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and was completed in 1602 (Keichō 7) by Takenaka Shigetoshi, who was assigned 35,000 koku after the Battle of Sekigahara. The castle was strategically built on a site nestled between the Oita and Sumiyoshi Rivers, appearing to float on water. Its white earthen walls and seemingly floating appearance earned it the nickname "Shirakijo Castle". Funai Castle was a flatland castle with a tiered enclosure system, featuring three main enclosures and three moats. It once boasted a four-story keep, 23 towers, 5 gates, and 3 covered bridges. However, many structures were lost to war and earthquakes. Nevertheless, remnants such as the Hitojichiyagura (double-storied tower) in the northwest corner of the honmaru (main enclosure), the Shōmon-yagura (single-storied tower) in the west enclosure, stone walls, earthen walls, and moats remain, designated as historical sites of Oita Prefecture. The castle ruin park has been developed as a relaxing space for citizens. In spring, it's ablaze with cherry blossoms, offering a breathtaking spectacle. Visitors can also explore the keep's foundations, the restored Ōtemon Gate, and a restored covered bridge, immersing themselves in history. Conveniently located in the center of Oita City, Oita Castle Ruins Park is easily accessible and offers something for everyone—a perfect destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
