Saiki Castle is a mountain castle built by Mori Takamasa after the Battle of Sekigahara. Construction began in 1606 and was completed six years later. Built atop 144-meter-high Hachimanyama mountain, it's characterized by its strategic location and magnificent stone walls. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Saiki city, Saiki Bay, and the surrounding natural beauty. Remnants of the castle, including stone walls and moats, remain, offering a glimpse into its past. The four-tiered stone walls on the north side of the honmaru (main enclosure) are particularly impressive, showcasing their scale and craftsmanship. Designated a national historic site, Saiki Castle is also selected as one of the Ōita Hyakkei (100 Views of Ōita) and Zoku Nippon Hyakumei-jō (Continued 100 Famous Castles of Japan). Saiki Castle Ruins are a recommended sightseeing spot for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Four mountain trails lead to the castle ruins, ranging from the gentle "Doppo-hi no Michi" (Doppo Monument Trail) suitable for beginners to the more challenging "Tōjō no Michi" (Castle Ascent Trail), allowing visitors to choose a path according to their fitness level. Along the trails, you'll find monuments to Kunikida Doppo and informational signs detailing the history of Saiki Castle, making for an educational and enjoyable hike. The summit boasts an observation deck offering stunning views of Saiki city, along with rest areas and a shop selling light snacks and drinks. Saiki Castle Ruins offer a perfect blend of history and nature.
