One of the remaining samurai residences in Kitsuki Castle Town, free to visit.
The Nomizu Residence is an Edo-period samurai residence located in Kitsuki Castle Town, registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It was once the home of the Nomizu family, who served as senior retainers to the Kitsuki clan. The grounds preserve buildings and gardens from that era, offering a glimpse into the lives of the time. The Nomizu family took their surname from Nomizu in Mikawa Province (present-day Aichi Prefecture), the ancestral home of the Matsudaira family, lords of Kitsuki. The first head of the family was Yukinosuke, the ninth son of the fifth lord, Chikamitsu. Reflecting this prestigious lineage, the residence boasts impressive architectural and garden aesthetics. Inside the residence, you'll find rooms like the entrance hall and the upper hall, showcasing its grandeur. The garden features a pond and stone lanterns, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The Nomizu Residence is a precious site where you can truly feel the history of Kitsuki Castle Town. Extensive renovations were carried out over two years starting in 2008, restoring the residence to its original appearance. The site covers 1440 square meters, with a total floor area of 250 square meters. The renovations also included the addition of a cafe and souvenir shop, enhancing the multifaceted appeal of the residence. We highly recommend a visit!
