Overview

Kitsuki Castle, built in 1394 by Kimura Yorinao, was a prominent castle in Bungō Province, with a history spanning over 600 years. Initially constructed on Daizan, a strategic location at the mouth of the Takayama and Yasaka Rivers, it saw several changes in ownership over the centuries, passing through the hands of the Maeda, Sugihara, Hosokawa, Ogasawara, and finally the Matsudaira clans, each era leaving its mark. After being abandoned in the Meiji period, a concrete replica of the castle keep was reconstructed in 1970, allowing visitors to imagine its former glory. The castle houses a local history museum showcasing artifacts related to Kitsuki Castle's history and culture. From the keep, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Kitsuki city and the Bungo Strait. The surrounding castle town preserves samurai residences and merchant houses, offering a glimpse into the past. Kitsuki Castle is a captivating tourist spot where history and culture come alive. Explore the charming streets of the castle town and reflect on the rich history of Kitsuki Castle.
