Experience the rejuvenating power of natural, flowing sulfur hot springs – a 400-year-old onsen town renowned for its medicinal properties.
Takayu Onsen is a hot spring town located at an elevation of 750 meters, nestled in the midsection of the Azuma mountain range in Machinishikasaka, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. Boasting a history spanning over 400 years, it's famed for its readily available sulfur hot springs rich in medicinal properties. Its history dates back to the Tenbun era (1532-1555), when the hot springs were reportedly discovered. By the Keicho era (1596-1615), it had become a well-known spa resort. According to local history researchers, the onsen began to be utilized in 1607 (Keicho 12). Legend has it that Shishido Goemon and Sugano Kuniyasu discovered the springs, with Shishido establishing Shinobuya (the current "Attaka Yu" public bath) and Sugano opening a Ryokan called Adachiya. Takayu Onsen offers convenient access to popular tourist attractions in the western suburbs of Fukushima City (Azuma region), such as Jododaira and Azuma Ko-Fuji. It's a beloved relaxing spot easily accessible to visitors. Ten Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) dot the onsen town, alongside the Sugawa River, a tributary of the Abukuma River. Often referred to as one of the "Ohu Santanyu" (three great hot springs of the Ou region) alongside Shirabu Onsen and Zao Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture, Takayu is richly blessed with abundant hot spring resources. Takayu Onsen is renowned for having some of the highest sulfur concentrations in Japan. Dr. Shinrin of the Naval Hospital, after surveying sulfur hot springs nationwide, praised Takayu's waters as the "most effective hot spring in Japan." Takayu Onsen is a hot spring town where you can soothe daily fatigue and refresh both your mind and body. We invite you to experience Takayu Onsen for yourself.
