Overview

Tsuchiyu Onsen is a hot spring town in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, boasting a history of over 1400 years. Nestled on the mid-slope and near the mountain pass of the Azuma and Adatara mountain ranges, its stunning natural surroundings are a major draw. Its history is ancient, with a founding legend stating that Ōmunachinomikoto (Ōana no Mikoto) discovered the springs while striking the ground with a spear. This "pierced hot spring" (Tsukiyu) became "Tsuchiyu" over time. Legend also claims that in 587 AD (year 2 of Emperor Yomei’s reign), Shotoku Taishi’s envoy, Hata no Kawakatsu, took a spa treatment here. Records of Tsuchiyu also appear in the Azuma Kagami (Mirror of the East) during the Kamakura period. Tsuchiyu Onsen offers over 10 types of hot spring waters, making it a popular spa resort. These include hydrogencarbonate springs, simple hot springs, and sulfur springs, each with its unique therapeutic properties. Tsuchiyu Onsen is also renowned as the birthplace of the traditional kokeshi doll. Tsuchiyu kokeshi dolls are a representative folk craft of Fukushima City and one of the three major origins of kokeshi dolls. The onsen town features kokeshi-themed sculptures, souvenir shops, and even kokeshi-making workshops. Nearby natural attractions include Nita-numa and Onna-numa ponds, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. Enjoy the mizubashou and katakuri flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and stunning winter snow scenes. Tsuchiyu Onsen is a captivating town offering a rich blend of history, hot springs, nature, and culture. Make sure to visit when you're in Fukushima Prefecture.
