Awaji Yumebutai is a multifaceted cultural resort facility located in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Originally, this 160-meter-high site, Nadayama, was used as a sand excavation site for the construction of Kansai International Airport. Architect Tadao Ando then initiated a project to regenerate the natural environment, leading to the development and construction of Awaji Yumebutai.
Located on a hilltop overlooking the sea on Awaji Island's eastern coast, it features a variety of facilities, including an international conference center, resort hotel, open-air theater, and botanical garden. The grounds are dotted with unique gardens such as Hyakudan-en, Hanakirin-en, Awaji Yumebutai Promenade Garden, Kai no Hama, and Sen no Funsui. These gardens are connected by walkways and decks, creating a beautifully flowing garden experience.
Hyakudan-en, in particular, is a masterpiece. Located on a single slope overlooking the sea, it consists of one hundred flowerbeds and a three-dimensional maze-like staircase, representing a refined and sophisticated form of an Italian-style garden. The flowerbeds showcase various chrysanthemum plants from around the world, offering stunning seasonal blooms.
Awaji Yumebutai is one of Tadao Ando's signature works and served as the venue for the "Japan Flora 2000" International Horticultural and Landscape Expo. The beautiful harmony of nature and architecture captivates visitors and provides the perfect place for relaxation and rejuvenation.
