A garden where history and nature harmonize, featuring a beautiful tide-in pond whose water level changes with the ebb and flow of the tide.
Kotonoura Onsanso Garden, located in Kaina City, Wakayama Prefecture, is a tide-in pond garden (shioiri-shiki ikeizen kaiyu teien) designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. Designed by Kizu Yokusai, the representative of the Musha-koji Senke school of tea ceremony, between the early Taisho and early Showa periods, the garden features a tide-in pond whose water level rises and falls with the ocean tides. The three ponds within the garden each offer unique and captivating views. For instance, the "Oike" (large pond) sprawling in front of the main house exudes a tranquil atmosphere in harmony with the surrounding greenery, offering a serene beauty. Meanwhile, the "Naka-ike" (middle pond) presents a stunning contrast between the surrounding rocks and trees, creating a dynamic impression. And finally, the "Ko-ike" (small pond) offers a peaceful scene, often graced by the presence of charming water birds. The garden also features historical structures, including tea rooms and sitting rooms. The "Kyoka-an" tea room, designed by Kizu Yokusai himself, offers a glimpse into the world of the Japanese tea ceremony. The "Hama-zashiki" (seaside sitting room) provides a relaxing open space with an ocean view. Furthermore, the view of Kuroe Bay beyond the tunnel within the garden is simply breathtaking. The blue waters of Wakaura Bay and the distant islands create a magnificent panorama. Kotonoura Onsanso Garden displays beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. Enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter.
