Itoyamatenbo (Itoyama Observatory)

Overview

Itoyamatenbo is an observation point in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, located at the starting point of the Shimanami Kaido on the Imabari side. From the observation point, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Kurushima Strait, one of Japan's three great tidal currents, and the majestic Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge spanning it. The Kurushima Strait is an important waterway connecting the eastern and western parts of the Seto Inland Sea and has been used as a shipping route since ancient times. However, its strong currents are also known as a dangerous part of the sea, and many ships have been wrecked there throughout history. The Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge, completed in 1999, is a 1091m-long cable-stayed bridge that has become one of the representative landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea. From Itoyamatenbo, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge, the strong currents flowing beneath it, and the distant islands. The sunset is particularly enchanting, with the sea and the bridge bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun, captivating many visitors. The area around the observation point also boasts other tourist facilities, including the Kurushima Kaikyo Observation Hall and Sunrise Itoyama, ensuring a fulfilling day out.
