A mystical gorge in Kamiichi-machi, Toyama Prefecture. The breathtaking sight of numerous waterfalls of varying sizes cascading down is truly awe-inspiring.
Sengankei Gorge, located in Kamiichi-machi, Toyama Prefecture, is a mystical gorge situated right next to Daiwazawa Jisseki-ji Temple. Because of its many waterfalls of varying sizes scattered throughout its narrow 160m-high and 200m-east-west flowing area, it's also known as Hyakutaki-kei (Hundred Waterfalls Gorge). The wild and untamed flow of water cascading down the gorge, like a collapsing white cloud or a leaping white dragon, is a breathtaking spectacle, like a scroll painted by nature itself. Numerous rocks with intriguing names add to its charm, including the Imoseiwa (twin rocks embracing each other), Tenkuishi, Rodanishi, Koiteiishi, and Ebaguchiishi. The scenery, a tapestry woven from the colors of the changing seasons and the sounds of the flowing stream, captivates all who visit. Selected as one of the 'Precious Moss Forests of Japan' by the Japanese Bryological Society, Sengankei Gorge is a beautiful gorge covered in many types of moss. Stepping into this tranquil world, you can almost sense the sacred history of this place as a site for mountain ascetic practices and esoteric Buddhist training. It's conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from Daiwazawa Jisseki-ji Temple, making it easy to visit as part of your sightseeing trip. Requiring no special equipment, it's a beloved spot where many tourists easily enjoy nature. In 2023, it received the Toyama Prefecture Urui Keikan Toyama Award, a prize recognizing excellent landscape preservation efforts. If you're visiting Toyama Prefecture, be sure to visit Sengankei Gorge!
