Nawagaike Pond in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is known for its stunning skunk cabbage (Mizubasho) blooms, reaching their peak beauty from early May to early June.
Nawagaike Pond is a natural lake approximately 2km in circumference, located in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of about 800m, it's constantly replenished by springs originating from Takakimizuyama Mountain. The surrounding area is a wetland teeming with a natural monument: a large colony of skunk cabbage (Mizubasho). From early May to early June, the skunk cabbage reaches its peak bloom, captivating visitors with its breathtaking beauty. Historically, Nawagaike was a small marsh. However, starting in 1935 (Showa 10), a dam was constructed to secure agricultural water, artificially expanding the marsh into the lake we see today. Nawagaike is also steeped in legend, specifically a dragon god tale. According to the story, in the Heian period, a warrior named Tawara Tota Hideyoshi, after slaying a giant serpent at the Seta Bridge in Omi Province, was asked by a dragon god residing in Lake Biwa to defeat a centipede in Mount Mikami. In gratitude, the dragon god gifted Tota a dragon's child to alleviate a water shortage in Joto. Tota placed the dragon's child in a small hole dug in the mountain, surrounded it with ropes, and prayed. Overnight, a pond sprang forth, becoming the Nawagaike Pond we know today. While famous for its skunk cabbage, Nawagaike also offers a tranquil lakeside setting perfect for immersing yourself in nature. The surrounding area boasts walking trails where you can enjoy various mountain wildflowers. Informative signs detailing the skunk cabbage colony and the dragon god legend are also available. When visiting Nawagaike, take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll.
