Sho-myo Falls in Toyama Prefecture boasts the highest drop in the prefecture at an impressive 350 meters! The dynamic spray is truly spectacular!
Sho-myo Falls, located in Tateyama-cho, Toyama Prefecture, is a majestic waterfall originating from the Tateyama mountain range. With a drop of 350 meters, it holds the title of Japan's tallest waterfall. The water plunges dramatically from the Myoho-ga-hara plateau, forming the Sho-myo River before flowing into the Jokanji River. Its sheer scale and dynamic spray are overwhelmingly impressive. However, the charm of Sho-myo Falls extends beyond its sheer size. Its appearance changes dramatically with each season. In spring, the abundant meltwater creates the "Hannoki Falls" alongside Sho-myo Falls, resulting in a magical double waterfall scene. Summer brings increased water volume, causing the falls to surge powerfully, with spray erupting from the plunge pool, resembling a dam's discharge. In autumn, the surrounding valley bursts into vibrant reds and yellows, creating a breathtaking contrast between the colorful foliage and the white waterfall, resulting in a truly enchanting scene. Sho-myo Falls is accessible via the Sho-myo Falls sightseeing bus (approximately 15 minutes from Tateyama Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway), followed by a 30-minute walk. Alternatively, you can drive from the Tateyama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway (approximately 50 minutes), followed by a 30-minute walk. A free parking lot with a capacity of 247 vehicles is available. When visiting Sho-myo Falls, comfortable walking shoes and a raincoat are recommended. Please note that pets are not allowed on the walking trails within the national park. Sho-myo Falls is a truly representative waterfall of Japan, offering a spectacle of magnificent nature, dynamic spray, and seasonal variations. We highly encourage you to visit and witness its impressive scale and beauty firsthand.
