A serene shrine on a peaceful island, watching over the health and growth of children.
Tsushima Shrine sits on a small island off the coast of Mino-cho, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. This shrine has long been revered as a guardian deity for children's health and growth, cherished by the local community. While its origins are ancient and shrouded in some mystery, historical documents indicate its existence as far back as the Muromachi period. The shrine is a 10-minute boat ride from Mino-cho, Mitoyo City. Nestled on a tranquil island surrounded by abundant nature, its location is truly captivating. The shrine grounds include a main hall, a worship hall, a kagura hall (hall for sacred music and dance), and other structures, each possessing a historical charm. The main hall, built during the Edo period, is particularly noteworthy and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Every year, from August 4th to 5th, during the Summer Festival, a grand procession takes place from the coast to the island, attracting large crowds. This vibrant procession features portable shrines (mikoshi), lion dances (shishimai), and other festive elements. Tsushima Shrine is beloved by many for its enchanting scenery and palpable sense of history. When visiting Tsushima Shrine, we highly recommend taking the boat; the island's views from the water are truly exceptional.
