Overview
Yoshinogawa shirasu-unagi fishing is a traditional fishing method practiced at the mouth of the Yoshinogawa River in Tokushima Prefecture. Shirasu-unagi are glass eels, the young of eels, which migrate from the sea upriver. Fishermen illuminate the river surface at night with lights to attract and catch the shirasu-unagi. This fishing method has been practiced in the Yoshinogawa River for a long time and is known as a winter tradition.
The fishing season is from December 15th to late April each year. Fishing is most active during the ebb and flow tides around the spring tides. The sight of numerous brightly lit fishing boats moving across the river is truly awe-inspiring. Particularly on nights with a full moon, fewer boats are out, as shirasu-unagi are sensitive to light and become more wary. However, this creates a more tranquil and mysteriously beautiful atmosphere.
Yoshinogawa shirasu-unagi fishing offers a valuable experience of the coexistence of nature and humans. Why not experience the power of traditional fishing methods while gazing at the fantastic sea of lights?
The Yoshinogawa River area also boasts many attractions, including hot springs and historical buildings. Be sure to enjoy the charms of the Yoshinogawa River in Tokushima Prefecture, along with the shirasu-unagi fishing.
