Okazaki Castle was originally built in the mid-15th century by Yoritsugu Saigo. Later, Kiyoyasu Matsudaira moved his base here, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was born. During the Edo period, it was regarded as the "castle of the divine ruler's birth" and was governed by hereditary vassals. The castle tower and other structures were demolished by the decree abolishing castles in the Meiji era, but were rebuilt in 1959 thanks to the enthusiasm of the citizens. Inside the castle is a historical museum where you can learn about Ieyasu's life and the history of Okazaki. Okazaki Park, where Okazaki Castle is located, has also been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, and about 800 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom in the spring. Within the park, there is also Ryujo Shrine, which enshrines Ieyasu, and the Mikawa Samurai House Ieyasu Museum, offering a full day of enjoyment.
