An open-air museum recreating a Meiji-era town. Experience precious architecture and scenery!
Overview
Meiji Mura is an open-air museum that has relocated and restored precious architectural structures from the Meiji era, recreating the townscape of that time. Around 60 buildings are scattered throughout five sections (1-cho to 5-cho), offering a glimpse into the daily life and culture of the era. Many of the buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties, making it a must-see for history buffs.
The charm of Meiji Mura extends beyond simply viewing the buildings. You can actually enter the buildings and experience the life of that time. For example, in the cafe adjacent to the entrance of the former Imperial Hotel, you can enjoy tea using tables and chairs designed by Frank Lloyd Wright from that period. Guided tours provide detailed information about the history of the buildings and daily life in the Meiji era.
Meiji Mura also operates steam locomotives and trains. You can experience riding these modes of transportation from that time. The grounds also feature restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, ensuring a full day of enjoyment.
Meiji Mura is a recommended tourist spot for history lovers, families, and couples. Please stroll through the Meiji-era streetscape and experience the life of the time.

INFO
Parking is available at both the North Gate (5th block) and the Main Gate (1st block), so feel free to start from whichever you prefer. If you enter as soon as the village opens in the morning, you might be able to see everything by midday if you stick to a good pace.
The village also boasts charming vehicles. If you plan to use them, consider purchasing a one-day pass from the start. There are also tickets for bus-only rides. Note that neither the buses nor other vehicles go all the way to the top of the hill.
While exploring at your own pace is great, we highly recommend the free guided tours. If you find a building that catches your eye, consider joining one.
Guided tours are available for several locations: Each Block Guided Tour, Imperial Hotel Guided Tour, Kikai-kan (Mechanical Hall), Kobe Yamate Foreigner's Residence, Kouda Rohan's Residence (Kagiuan), Saigo Jondo's Residence, Kofukuza Theatre, Nishihara Kompo's Residence, Takada Koguma Photography Studio, Shibakawa Mataemon's Residence, and Higashimatsu House. Tour times are posted at each location, but a schedule is also available at the Guidance Center to the right of the Main Gate. Keep in mind that most tours finish between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, so some selection will be necessary.
There's also a mystery-solving event (I wonder which installment it is now?). It features cleverly designed puzzles, and many people are always giving it a try!
