A museum operated by the Mizkan Group where you can experience the history and culture of Japanese vinegar.
MIZKAN MUSEUM, located in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, is an experiential museum established by the Mizkan Group where you can learn about the history and culture of Japanese vinegar. Opened in 1986 (Showa 61), it was originally called "Su no Sato" (Vinegar Village). The museum houses a comprehensive collection of materials related to Mizkan's vinegar production, allowing visitors to explore the history of vinegar making from the Edo period to the present, including the manufacturing process and the history and culture of brewed vinegar. In the "Old Vinegar Making Zone," you can see tools used in vinegar production, the history of vinegar and barrel making from the Edo period, the warehouse craftsman system, the lives of the people, and the relationship between Handa's Kasu-zu (vinegar made from sake lees) and Edomae-style nigiri sushi. In the "Modern Vinegar Making Zone," you can tour the "fermentation room." The "Information Zone" provides information on the various uses and benefits of vinegar, as well as recipes. The museum temporarily closed on November 10, 2013 (Heisei 25), and reopened as "MIZKAN MUSEUM" on November 8, 2015 (Heisei 27). Its nickname is "MIM." It won the Good Design Award in 2016 (Heisei 28), the 58th BCS Award (sponsored by the Japan Federation of Construction Contractors) in 2017, and the 48th Chubu Architectural Award in the same year. MIZKAN MUSEUM is a valuable place to learn about and experience the history and culture of Japanese vinegar. Be sure to visit when you're in Handa City.
