A red brick warehouse built in the Meiji era has been reborn as a historical museum, event space, and cafe.
Handa Aka-renga Tatemono was built in 1898 (Meiji 31) as a brewery for Marusan Beer (currently Kabuto Beer), designed by Germania Maschinenfabrik in Germany. This building, which retains the atmosphere of a brewery from that era, is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. During World War II, it served as a food warehouse for Nakajima Aircraft Company’s Handa factory. After the war, it was partially used as a cornstarch factory by Nippon Shokuhin Kako. In 1994, facing demolition after the factory closed, a preservation movement by local residents and civic groups led to its purchase by Handa City. It reopened as a tourist facility on July 18, 2015. Now a popular complex facility, it houses a historical museum, event space, cafe, and beer hall. The historical museum features exhibits on the beer brewing process of the time and the history of Handa. The event space hosts various events, attracting both locals and tourists. The cafe and beer hall offer Kabuto Beer, recreating the tastes of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Handa Aka-renga Tatemono is a captivating place where you can touch history and culture and enjoy modern vibrancy. Be sure to visit!
