Stunning views of Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, and Shimizu Port! Enjoy the dazzling night view.
Nihonpira is a hilly area located on the border between Shizuoka City's Suruga Ward and Shimizu Ward in Shizuoka Prefecture. Its name originates from the legend of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. Located near the coast of Suruga Bay at an elevation of 307 meters, the summit of Udoyama mountain and its surrounding area offer breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula across Suruga Bay, and the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps) to the north. Below, the cityscape of Shimizu Ward and Shimizu Port unfold, and the nighttime view is particularly beautiful, earning it recognition as a "Japan Night View Heritage" site in 2016. Nihonpira has been cherished by many for its rich natural beauty and history. In 1950, it was ranked #1 in the plains category of the "100 Best Tourist Spots" contest sponsored by the Mainichi Shimbun, and in 1959, it was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. It also won first place in the 1980 Japan's 100 Best Tourist Spots contest, establishing its reputation as one of Japan's leading scenic areas. Nihonpira is home to Kunohasan Toshogu Shrine, associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the Nihonpira Ropeway connects the Nihonpira summit to the shrine. The ropeway offers stunning views of nature and a glimpse into history. Nihonpira also boasts various facilities, including Nihonpira Zoo, Shizuoka Prefectural Performing Arts Park, Yuki no Mori (Yuki Forest), and the Shizuoka City Shimizu Nihonpira Athletic Park stadium. Nihonpira is a leading tourist spot in Shizuoka Prefecture, where you can fully enjoy nature, history, and culture. Be sure to visit!
