The Matsumoto City Museum of Art opened in April 2002. In addition to a permanent exhibition room featuring artists with ties to Shinshu, it hosts various special exhibitions throughout the year. In particular, the works of avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, who hails from Matsumoto, are a symbol of the museum. Kusama's large-scale work "Visionary Flowers" is displayed outdoors next to the entrance, welcoming visitors. The museum underwent extensive renovations starting in April 2021 and reopened on April 21, 2022. Repairs were made to display cases and walls, LED lighting was installed, and a baby room was added, creating a more comfortable space for art appreciation. The museum also houses a museum shop and cafe, allowing visitors to take a break between art viewings.
