INFO
Nawate-dori is a pedestrian and bicycle-only street where vehicle entry is generally prohibited.
Nakamachi-dori allows vehicle traffic.
Please note that traffic restrictions may be in place during events.
Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori, located south of Matsumoto Castle, offer a glimpse into Matsumoto's history as a thriving castle town. After the Meiji period, the area south of Matsumoto Castle's outer moat was filled in, transforming into a bustling entertainment district lined with numerous stalls. Following World War II, a black market even operated there. In 2001, a complete renovation recreated the old townscape, resulting in the charming and nostalgic shopping streets we see today.
Nawate-dori runs along the Onnagawa River. At the main entrance from the Daimyocho side, you'll find the Ote Police Box and a Gama-zamurai (frog samurai) statue. Further in, you'll discover public restrooms (designed to look like Edo-period buildings for aesthetic reasons, located on the north side), florists, toy shops, and more. A short walk leads to Yuki Bridge (south side), a riverside park at the base of the bridge, and Yotsuya Shrine (north side) across the bridge.
From Yotsuya Shrine to Hitotsugi Bridge, you'll find many food and sundry shops. Mitsumatoya (north side), once famous for its roasted sweet potatoes and featured on television numerous times, sadly closed in 2007.
From Hitotsugi Bridge to the end of the street, restaurants become more prominent. A little further on, you'll find Nawate Yokocho (north side) with women's clothing stores and greengrocers. The public restrooms (south side) mark the end of Nawate-dori, with Naka-no-hashi bridge to the south and Kamitsuchimachi to the north.
Meanwhile, Nakamachi-dori is characterized by its many storehouses (dozo), creating a retro atmosphere with stylish cafes, unique shops, and traditional craft stores.
Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori are enchanting areas perfect for a stroll filled with history and culture. Be sure to visit when exploring Matsumoto Castle.
