INFO
Please be aware that the inside of the Tenshu閣 (castle keep) is narrow with steep stairs, so it may not be suitable for elderly people or young children.
Matsumoto Castle's construction began during the Sengoku period under the Ogasawara clan. Later, the Ishikawa clan, lords of Fukashi Castle, renovated it, and in 1593, it was built in its current location. The current donjon was completed in 1615. Famous for possessing Japan's oldest five-story, six-tiered donjon, Matsumoto Castle is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its exterior, coated in black lacquer plaster, gives it the nickname "Karasu-jo" (Crow Castle), exuding an imposing yet elegant aura. Inside the donjon, you can glimpse into the lives and culture of the time and learn about the history of the castle town. From the top floor of the donjon, you have a panoramic view of Matsumoto city and the Northern Alps, offering a breathtaking landscape. Matsumoto Castle is a captivating tourist spot where you can immerse yourself in history and culture while enjoying stunning scenery.
