Overview

Daianzenji Temple is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Myoshin-ji school located in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. Known as the family temple of the Matsudaira clan, lords of Fukui, it was founded in 1658 by Mitsumichi Matsudaira, the fourth lord. The temple boasts numerous historically significant structures, with many buildings retaining their original form since its construction, earning them designation as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The main hall, with its distinctive gabled roof covered in tiles, is a particular highlight. Intricate carvings and ceiling paintings reveal the superb craftsmanship of the era. Other buildings, including the kitchen, the founder's hall, and the opening monk's hall, are also open for visitors to explore. The temple grounds include "Senjo-jiki," the mausoleum of the Matsudaira family, where the graves of successive feudal lords are located. Paved with Fukui's renowned Shatani stone, Senjo-jiki creates a truly magnificent atmosphere. The approximately 1360 stones that make up the pavement, and a massive stone pillar standing approximately 3.7 meters tall, are awe-inspiring in scale. Daianzenji Temple offers stunning seasonal scenery. Cherry blossoms paint the grounds in pink during spring, while autumn brings a breathtaking display of autumn leaves. The tranquil setting is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. Daianzenji Temple offers a priceless opportunity to experience Japanese history and culture. Be sure to visit when you're in Fukui.
