An aquarium showcasing the abundant marine life of Fukushima Prefecture. Popular for its recreation of the confluence of ocean currents and various interactive programs.
Aquamarine Fukushima, located in Onahama, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, is an aquarium themed around the "shioume no umi" (meeting of currents) where the warm Kuroshio Current and the cold Oyashio Current converge. Opened in July 2000, it showcases the rich natural environment and diverse marine life of Fukushima Prefecture. The aquarium is designed with natural light streaming in and incorporates plants, creating a forest-like atmosphere. Exhibits recreate the ecosystems of the Okhotsk Sea (source of the Oyashio Current), the tropical Asian region (source of the Kuroshio Current), and the mountains, rivers, and seas of Fukushima Prefecture—offering endless fascinating sights. The large tank, "Shioume no Umi," spanning the 2nd to 4th floors, is truly breathtaking. This impressive tank recreates the ocean off Fukushima's coast, filled with a variety of fish and marine life, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. Aquamarine Fukushima offers more than just observation; it features engaging hands-on programs. Activities include fishing experiences, behind-the-scenes tours, and interactions with marine creatures at the outdoor Jakunome Beach—fun for both children and adults. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused extensive damage, resulting in power outages and the loss of 90% of the aquarium's marine life. However, through the tireless efforts of its staff, it reopened just four months later. The aquarium continues its recovery efforts through innovative exhibits and events. Aquamarine Fukushima is a wonderful place to learn about and experience the nature and marine life of Fukushima Prefecture. We highly recommend a visit!
