Overview

Abukuma Cave, located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a cave with a total length of 4218.3m. It was accidentally discovered during limestone mining on September 12, 1969, and opened to the public in June 1973. The cave is filled with various sizes of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as cave-dwelling creatures, offering a truly mystical experience. Abukuma Cave was formed over millions of years by the erosion of limestone, which itself was formed from the remains of marine organisms that accumulated on the seabed approximately 300 million years ago. The cave’s interior features stunningly beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in a wide array of shapes. Many cave creatures, such as bats, centipedes, and pseudoscorpions, also inhabit the cave. With a year-round temperature of around 14℃, Abukuma Cave offers a comfortable experience throughout the year, making it an ideal summer escape from the heat or a winter retreat seeking warmth. The interior is illuminated, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Abukuma Cave is also used for wine storage. The cave’s stable temperature and humidity provide the perfect environment for wine aging, resulting in wines with a unique flavor. Abukuma Cave is a must-see tourist spot where you can experience the mystery and beauty of nature.
