The Tohoku History Museum is a Miyagi Prefectural history museum located in Tagajō City, Miyagi Prefecture. Established in 1999, it's a redevelopment and relocation of the Tohoku Historical Materials Museum, opened in 1974. The main exhibition hall presents the history of the entire Tohoku region from the Paleolithic period to the modern era, divided into nine chronological sections. Detailed exhibition corners delve deeper into three key themes that highlight the unique characteristics of Tohoku. This museum is highly recommended for those who want a thorough understanding of Tohoku's history.
The Tohoku History Museum houses a wide array of exhibits. For instance, you can experience the history of ancient Tohoku through Jomon-period pottery and stone tools, Yayoi-period dotaku (bronze bells), and Kofun-period haniwa (clay figurines). Models of medieval castles and temples, and reconstructed houses from the early modern period, offer glimpses into various eras of Tohoku's past.
The Tohoku History Museum is more than just a repository of historical materials; it also hosts various events and workshops. From children's workshops to history lectures, there's a wide range of activities for all ages. The Tohoku History Museum is a recommended spot for history buffs and families alike.
