Cuddle fluffy foxes at this zoo in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture!
Miyagi Zao Kitsunemura is a fox-themed zoo located in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. Situated in the foothills of the Ou Mountains and Zao mountain range on the Miyagi side, it houses approximately 250 foxes of six breeds. All foxes at the park are artificially bred and regularly receive deworming medication. The facilities are also regularly disinfected to prevent the transmission of echinococcosis through oral infection. A large free-range area allows visitors to observe foxes moving freely. Foxes have a habit of digging burrows and lounging on the ground, so individuals covered in mud are often seen, especially after rainfall. Also, due to their instinctive biting behavior, observation is primarily recommended. Separate from the free-range area, there's an indoor area where visitors can directly cuddle echinococcus-free foxes – a rare opportunity globally, attracting many international tourists. From around Golden Week, there's also the chance to cuddle fox kits. Other animals like rabbits are also available for interaction. While foxes appear slender during the summer coat season, they become round and fluffy ("mofumofu" in Japanese) in winter, attracting even more visitors. This is why the park remains open year-round, despite the difficulty of access during the snowy winter months. The park also serves as an educational facility, hosting student internships and practical training programs. As fox free-range tourism is rare, the park attracts students from all over Japan. Miyagi Zao Kitsunemura has transformed into a popular destination for domestic and international tourists wanting to interact with fluffy animals. A video posted online around 2013 is considered a key factor in its rise to popularity.
