Located in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, Kawauchi River Valley is a gorge blessed with abundant natural beauty. In spring and early summer, the valley bursts with vibrant green, while autumn paints the landscape in fiery reds and yellows. The valley is home to numerous examples of nature's artistry, such as the "Otaki" waterfall, said to be inhabited by a dragon god, and potholes (ouketsu) carved into the riverbed.
The "Otaki" waterfall is located in the middle of the Kawauchi River Valley walking trail and is situated in a small, well-maintained park. Enjoy the refreshing sound and mist of the waterfall and breathe in the abundant negative ions.
Potholes are formed when pebbles trapped in depressions rotate, eroding the rock surface. The pothole cluster in Kawauchi is estimated to have formed over tens of thousands of years.
The Kawauchi River Valley walking trail is 3.2km long and features three unique bridges along the way: the Ajisai Bridge, the Sekirei Bridge, and the Asunaro Bridge, making for a varied and enjoyable walk.
A free parking lot and restrooms are available near the valley entrance for your convenience.
Kawauchi River Valley is a highly recommended destination for nature lovers.
