Overview

The Jozankei Dam, located in Jozankei, Minami-ku, Sapporo City, is a crucial water source, serving as Sapporo's second reservoir. Completed in 1989, this gravity concrete dam stands 117.5 meters tall, making it the second tallest dam in Hokkaido after Takami Dam. Downstream from the dam, you'll find the Jozankei Dam Downstream Park and the Jozankei Dam Museum, where you can learn about the dam's structure and the surrounding natural environment. Sapporo Lake, the reservoir created by the dam, is part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, offering stunning scenery. The Jozankei Dam was constructed in response to major floods in the 1970s and the city's rapidly growing population, serving as Sapporo's second reservoir after the Toyohira Dam. Completed in 1989, it plays a vital role in supporting the lives of Sapporo citizens. The sheer scale of the dam is awe-inspiring. The downstream park offers educational opportunities for both children and adults about the dam's structure and the surrounding natural environment. The Jozankei Dam area is also home to various attractions, including Jozankei Onsen (hot springs) and Sapporo International Ski Resort. Why not combine a visit to the dam with exploring the surrounding area? The Jozankei Dam is a familiar landmark for Sapporo residents and beloved by many. Experience the grandeur of nature and history firsthand with a visit to the Jozankei Dam.
