Overview

Rokkannon-mikoike Pond is a volcanic lake located at an elevation of 1300 meters in Ebino Kogen, Miyazaki Prefecture. This approximately 440-meter diameter lake is a maar, a type of crater formed by a phreatic eruption around 20,000 years ago. It's surrounded by a primeval forest of fir, hemlock, and Japanese red pine trees. The most striking feature of Rokkannon-mikoike Pond is its beautiful cobalt blue water. The highly acidic water inhibits the growth of phytoplankton, resulting in exceptional clarity and its deep blue hue. On sunny days, the sunlight reflects off the surface, creating a truly magical and shimmering spectacle. The name Rokkannon-mikoike (Six Kannon Pond) originates from the Rokkannon-do Hall located on the northern bank. Legend says that in 959 AD, a monk named Shoku was chanting the Lotus Sutra by the pond when a white-haired old man appeared, identifying himself as Yamato Takeru, who had transformed into a white bird and resided in the mountain. Moved by this encounter, Shoku carved six Kannon statues and enshrined them in a hall he built by the pond. A well-maintained nature trail makes Rokkannon-mikoike Pond accessible for hiking and trekking. Other nearby ponds, such as Shira-murasaki-ike and Fudo-ike, offer further opportunities for scenic walks. Rokkannon-mikoike Pond is a captivating destination, offering a blend of stunning natural beauty and rich history. We highly recommend a visit!
