A serene temple surrounded by beautiful nature with views of Mount Chokai. A historic temple visited by Matsuo Bashō.
Kōmyōzan Kanmanji Temple is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Kisakata, Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture. Known as one of the sites on the Oku no Hosomichi pilgrimage route, it sits in a peaceful and beautiful natural setting overlooking Mount Chokai. It has been cherished by the local people for many years. Matsuo Bashō visited this place in 1672 and carved the haiku "Shizuka sa ya iwa ni shimiiru semi no koe" (How quiet! The cicada's cry penetrates the rocks) into a stone monument. It is said that Bashō was deeply impressed by the nature and culture of this area through his interactions with the temple's priest. In addition to Bashō's stone monument, the temple grounds contain a building believed to have been Bashō's lodging and exhibits of items related to him. Located at the foot of Mount Chokai, Kanmanji Temple is closely connected to mountain worship, and the grounds feature numerous stone statues symbolic of this tradition. Kanmanji Temple is a tranquil place where history, culture, and beautiful nature harmoniously coexist. Why not spend some time peacefully gazing at Mount Chokai in the quiet atmosphere?
