Tochikura's rice terraces, located in the Nakajyo district of Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, are a designated site among Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces. They are situated on the middle slopes of Mushikusayama mountain. These terraces are arranged neatly in approximately 50 rectangular plots, surrounding thatched-roof houses with distinctive red tin roofs, with the iconic Mushikusayama mountain—once a symbol of Nakajo Village—providing a breathtaking backdrop. The total area of the terraces is about 4.5 hectares, with an elevation ranging from 750 to 850 meters and an average gradient of 1/20. The origins of these rice terraces are believed to date back to around 1500 AD, with their water source originating from rivers. Tochikura's rice terraces have received the Nagano City Landscape Award for their exquisite beauty. You can appreciate the changing scenery throughout the year, from fresh greenery in spring to vibrant autumn foliage. However, autumn is particularly captivating, with the golden hues of the rice paddies contrasting beautifully with the thatched-roof houses, creating a breathtaking panorama. Well-maintained walking paths wind through the terraces, allowing visitors to leisurely admire the stunning landscapes. Other rice terraces, such as Onishi and Tazawaoki rice terraces, are also located nearby, making them perfect for exploring alongside Tochikura.
