Boasting the most history of any park in Iizuka City, Katsumori Park offers breathtaking views of cherry blossoms and azaleas in full bloom.
Katsumori Park is the oldest park in Iizuka City, located in its heart. It began in 1921 as a 4,896-tsubo (approx. 16,150 sq ft) park featuring walking paths and plantings. In 1935, Taikichi Aso donated an adjacent 8,895-tsubo (approx. 29,300 sq ft) plot, establishing what became known as 'Hazuyama Park' (renamed 'Katsumori Park' in 1957). This park, established to commemorate Taikichi Aso, was reportedly quite large, once featuring a small zoo and a miniature steam train. The old Katsumori Park and Katsumori Park merged in 1962 to form the current Katsumori Park. The centerpiece of Katsumori Park is Katsumori Pond. A vibrant vermillion arched bridge, Shigatsuki-bashi, crosses the pond, creating a stunning scene that captivates many visitors. Various trees, including Someiyoshino cherry trees and azaleas, are planted around the pond, offering beautiful seasonal views. In spring, approximately 300 Someiyoshino cherry trees burst into bloom, painting the park in shades of pink. During the cherry blossom season, the park is bustling with visitors, and nighttime illuminations add to the magic. In May, around 8,000 azaleas put on a spectacular display, transforming the park into a vibrant sea of pink. Azalea festivals are often held during this period. Autumn brings a different kind of beauty, with the park's trees displaying their autumn foliage. This is a great time to enjoy the autumn leaves. Katsumori Park is a beloved local spot, offering a place to connect with nature and relax. With a steam locomotive and playground equipment, it's a fun destination for all ages. If you're visiting Iizuka City, be sure to visit Katsumori Park.
