Overview

Lake Kussharo is Japan's largest caldera lake, situated in Teshikaga-cho, eastern Hokkaido. Formed approximately 30,000 years ago by the collapse of a massive volcano's crater, it's surrounded by majestic mountains and boasts strikingly clear blue waters. The lakeside is rich in diverse plant life, and the sounds of birdsong fill the air, showcasing the area's abundant natural beauty. At the lake's center lies Nakajima, Japan's largest lake island, accessible by sightseeing boat. Nakajima bears the remnants of past volcanic activity, including craters and lava flows, offering a tangible connection to the raw power of nature. Lake Kussharo also offers various activities, including canoeing and fishing. Furthermore, the lakeside boasts numerous hot spring facilities, providing the perfect opportunity to relax in an onsen while enjoying the lake's stunning views. Lake Kussharo displays breathtaking beauty throughout the year. Spring brings vibrant cherry blossoms, summer lush greenery, autumn fiery foliage, and winter a pristine, snow-covered wonderland. Every season offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
