Lake Mashū is a caldera lake located in Akan-Mashū National Park in eastern Hokkaido. It's believed to have been formed by a massive volcanic eruption around 7,000 years ago. Known as the "Mysterious Lake" due to its exceptional clarity, it attracts visitors from around the globe. The color of the lake water, especially on sunny days – a breathtaking phenomenon known as "Mashū Blue" – defies description. This beautiful hue is a miracle of light refraction, a result of the lake's depth and almost complete lack of impurities.
Lake Mashū is also famous for its consistently stable water level, as no rivers flow into or out of it. This results in exceptionally clean water and world-class transparency. The surrounding area is designated a Special Protection District for environmental conservation. With minimal buildings and artificial light, the night sky offers breathtaking views of the stars.
Several observation points around Lake Mashū, such as Mashū Dai-ichi Observatory, Mashū Dai-san Observatory, and Ura-Mashū Observatory, offer stunning views of the lake. The surrounding area boasts abundant nature, perfect for trekking and camping. Furthermore, the area around Lake Mashū offers a range of hot springs and accommodations for a relaxing stay. Lake Mashū is a truly healing sanctuary where you can feel the power of nature.
