An observatory offering breathtaking views of Lake Touro and the expansive Kushiro Marsh.
Sarubo Observatory is one of the representative viewpoints of Kushiro Marsh, located on the northern side of Lake Touro. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Lake Touro and the vast Kushiro Marsh. Lake Touro, with a circumference of approximately 17.9km, an area of about 637ha, and a maximum depth of about 7m, is the largest brackish lake in Kushiro Marsh. From Sarubo Observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lake's surface and the surrounding abundant nature. To the north of Sarubo Observatory, the expanse of Kushiro Marsh unfolds before you, allowing you to observe the meandering Kushiro River weaving its way through the wetlands. Furthermore, due to the unobstructed view, on a clear day you can even see the city of Kushiro in the distance. Sarubo Observatory is a highly recommended spot to fully enjoy the magnificent and beautiful nature of Kushiro Marsh. The scenery is particularly stunning in spring with fresh greenery and in autumn with vibrant fall foliage, offering breathtaking views throughout the year. To access the observatory, take National Route 391, then Hokkaido Prefectural Road 1060 (also known as the Kussharo Genya To Road), and continue for approximately 1.5km on a dirt road. The road is somewhat rough, so caution is advised. While the observatory is a short walk from the parking area, the path is well-maintained and easy to walk. Benches and an observation deck are provided, allowing you to relax and take in the scenery. Sarubo Observatory is a must-visit spot when sightseeing in Kushiro Marsh.
