A beautiful and easily accessible waterfall located just steps from the parking lot. A nearby cafe makes it a perfect sightseeing spot.
Otome-no-taki (Otome Falls) is a beautiful waterfall located in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, cascading down from Mount Shirasasa into the Sawana River. With a drop of approximately 10 meters, it's known as a spot rich in negative ions, offering a refreshing experience for both body and mind. Several legends surround the name "Otome-no-taki", meaning "Maiden Falls". One story says its name originates from the gentle, beautiful flow resembling a maiden's hair. Another tells of a local young fisherman who encountered a blind, beautiful maiden atop the falls. This legend is said to be connected to a folktale of Komoriishi (a guardian stone) in the Numappara Marsh further upstream, where the maiden is described as the transformed spirit of a blind snake. Otome-no-taki is easily accessible, with a parking lot a short walk from the falls. The surrounding area boasts cafes and rest areas, making it an ideal tourist destination. A 30-meter staircase leads from the parking lot to an observation deck, and another 30-meter descent brings you to the river. The path to the base of the falls involves descending a somewhat steep staircase, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Nestled in a nature-rich environment, Otome-no-taki offers breathtaking seasonal views. Cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, stunning autumn foliage, and a magical winter wonderland of snow make it a destination enjoyable year-round. Be sure to visit!
