Itamuro Onsen is a historic hot spring resort that has long been cherished as a place for healing. Surrounded by abundant nature, it offers a relaxing space where you can unwind both physically and mentally.
Itamuro Onsen is a hot spring located in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, within Nikko National Park. According to legend, it was discovered in March 1059 (during the reign of Emperor Goshoen) by Nasu Muneshige, the lord of Nasu County, Shimotsuke Province, while hunting. Local villagers in Itamuro Honmura started operating Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) as a supplemental occupation, which marked the beginning of the hot spring resort. Subsequently, it became known as "Shimotsuke no Yakuyu" (Shimotsuke's medicinal hot spring) and was counted among the Nasu Shichiyu (seven hot springs of Nasu) in the early modern period. On March 23, 1971, it was designated as a National Spa Resort and selected as a "Fureai Yasuragi Onsenchi" (a hot spring area for interaction and relaxation). All bathing facilities except for the municipal bathing facility "Itamuro Kenko no Yu Green Green" use natural spring water. The water quality is either simple hot spring or sulfate spring, with temperatures ranging from 31°C to 49°C. Itamuro Onsen's charm lies in its history, tradition, and its stunning natural environment. While visiting Itamuro Onsen, be sure to try "Tsuna-yu." Tsuna-yu is a unique bathing method in Itamuro Onsen, involving standing in the bath while holding onto a rope tied to the rafters of a small bathhouse. The water pressure improves blood circulation and is said to be effective for joint pain. Beyond Tsuna-yu, Itamuro Onsen offers many other attractions. For example, there are many spots where you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery such as Otome-no-taki waterfall and Numappara Marshland.
