One of the three shrines of Munakata Taisha, located in a sacred place connecting Okino-shima and Oshima islands. It's a shrine where prayers are offered for the safe passage of maritime transport.
Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gu Shrine is located on Oshima Island in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Situated in a sacred location connecting Okino-shima and Oshima islands, it's one of the three shrines of Munakata Taisha, enshrining Tagitsuhime-no-kami, one of the Munakata Sanjin. Since ancient times, it has been devoutly worshipped by local fishermen and sailors as a shrine to pray for the safety of maritime transport. The atmosphere is peaceful and mystical, offering a sense of serenity to visitors. The highlight is the spot where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sacred sacred trees and the beautiful ocean, providing true solace. A stream called "Amanogawa" (Milky Way) flows through the grounds, and on either side of it stand the Kengyu-sha and Orihime-sha shrines, echoing the celestial Milky Way. The most significant festival at Nakatsu-gu, the Tanabata Matsuri, is held on August 7th, close to the lunar calendar's July 7th. The main hall, believed to have been built in the early 17th century, is designated as a prefectural tangible cultural property. Smaller shrines (massha) from Oshima Island are gathered around the main shrine and worshipped together. A 970-meter pathway leads from behind the main hall to the summit of Mount Otake. After the ancient rituals common to Okino-shima, Otake Shrine was built on the summit, and the main hall and prayer hall of Nakatsu-gu at the foot of the mountain. The summit shrine and the foot shrine are connected by this pathway, forming a unified place of worship. Climbing to the 224-meter summit offers a stunning view on clear days, encompassing Okino-shima and the entire Munakata region on the opposite side. Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gu Shrine is a sacred place where history and nature harmonize, enveloped in tranquility and a mystical atmosphere. It's a highly recommended sightseeing spot that offers deep emotion and healing to its visitors.
