Overview
The Takaikai stone walls are a magnificent structure built into the steep mountainside at an elevation of 350 meters in Mikami Oji, Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture. Their history is ancient; they were originally built as a measure to protect homes and fields from landslides. The stone walls extend over 100 meters, rising in tiers, creating a stunning vista that resembles a fortress. They truly represent the ingenuity and hard work of the people. Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Villages, their beauty captivates many. In April, the Shiba-zakura (moss phlox) blooms beautifully in harmony with the stone walls, attracting numerous tourists. Learning about the history and cultural background of the stone walls will deepen your appreciation. The surrounding area offers scenic walking trails amidst abundant nature, and shops where you can sample local specialties, making it a perfect place for a full day's adventure.
