Kawai Pass is a mountain pass on National Route 438, located on the border between Kamiyama-cho, Myoshi District, Tokushima Prefecture and Mima City, at an elevation of approximately 764m. Historically, the Ueyama Kaido (road) passed through here, connecting to Miyoshi City. The Kawai Tunnel, opened in 1966, is located on the pass, and Tokushima Prefectural Road Tokushima Kenzan Line used to pass through it, but it is now National Route 438. From the Kiyahira side of the tunnel, you can enjoy distant views of mountains such as Mount Kenzan, Mount Marusasa, and Mount Ichinomori. Approximately 20 weeping cherry trees bloom on a slope 50 meters down from the Kawai Tunnel on the Mima City Kiyahira side, making it a famous spot. At Kawai Pass, at an elevation of approximately 700 meters, the cherry blossoms bloom about 10 days later than in the plains. In spring, weeping cherry blossoms bloom profusely, creating a beautiful landscape against the backdrop of majestic mountains. The weeping cherry trees blooming on the slope 50 meters down from the Kawai Tunnel on the Mima City Kiyahira side are particularly noteworthy, having been selected as one of the "Nishi Awa Recommended Viewpoints 100," attracting many tourists. From the pass, you can enjoy panoramic views of mountains such as Mount Kenzan, Mount Marusasa, and Mount Ichinomori, making it a recommended rest stop for drivers and tourers.
