Located on Naoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, the Chichu Art Museum opened in 2004 with the theme of "coexistence of nature and humans." Designed by architect Tadao Ando, a notable feature is that most of the building is buried underground. This is out of consideration to avoid impairing the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea. The museum permanently exhibits the works of three artists: Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria, which can be appreciated in special spaces created specifically for each piece. Monet's "Water Lilies" change their expression depending on the time and season in a space where natural light streams in, and Turrell's works teach us that light itself is art. In addition, along the path from the ticket center to the museum, there is the "Chichu Garden," which recreates the garden that Monet loved, where you can enjoy seasonal flowers. The Chichu Art Museum offers a unique art experience that integrates art, architecture, and nature.
