The Yakage Local Museum of Art, located in Yakage-cho, Oda-gun, Okayama Prefecture, is a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the town's rich history and culture. Yakage-cho flourished as a post town during the Edo period, and its traditional streetscape remains largely intact. The museum is situated on a hilltop offering stunning views of this historic townscape. The building itself is a sight to behold, constructed using traditional methods with Akamatsu (Japanese red pine), the town's designated tree. Ascend the 16-meter-high water-viewing platform for a truly breathtaking panoramic view of the historic streets below.
Inside, the museum features works by local artists, including calligrapher Tanaka Kaitō and Western painter Satō Isshō. Tanaka Kaitō, a prominent calligrapher of the early Showa period, is known for his powerful and bold brushstrokes. Satō Isshō, a Western painter active during the Taisho period, is celebrated for his realistic depictions of natural landscapes, imbued with a sense of vitality amidst tranquility.
The museum also includes a community gallery showcasing the creative works of Yakage's residents. This space features a diverse range of artwork, including paintings, calligraphy, photography, and pottery, reflecting the vibrant cultural activities of the town.
The Yakage Local Museum of Art offers a unique opportunity to experience the history and culture of Yakage-cho while surrounded by the beauty of nature. We highly recommend a visit.
