Visit the Rokkakudo and the former Tenshin residence, places associated with Okakura Tenshin, the father of modern Nihonga (Japanese-style painting).
Overview
The Ibaraki University Itsura Museum of Art and Culture is located on the former site of the residence of Okakura Tenshin, a Meiji-era artist and philosopher.
Tenshin visited Itsura in 1903, captivated by its beautiful natural scenery. He made it his base, reviving the Japan Art Academy and mentoring many Japanese painters, including Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, Risada Shunso, and Kimura Busen.
The museum houses the Rokkakudo (Hexagonal Hall), where Tenshin contemplated, and the former Tenshin residence.
The Rokkakudo, a vermillion building on a rock jutting into the Pacific Ocean, was known to Tenshin as "Kanrantei." It was lost in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami, but was rebuilt in 2012 as faithfully as possible to its original form.
The former Tenshin residence was built when Tenshin moved to Itsura. It retains its original atmosphere and is now used as a facility of the Ibaraki University Itsura Museum of Art and Culture.
The museum displays materials and works related to Tenshin, allowing visitors to learn about his life, philosophy, and activities in Itsura. It also features exhibits on the cultural exchange between Tenshin and Itsura.
Itsura Coast boasts a diverse coastline with coves and cliffs—a scenic area dearly loved by Tenshin. This magnificent natural landscape is said to be one of the reasons he chose this location.
The Itsura Museum of Art and Culture offers a chance to experience Tenshin's philosophy and art, as well as the natural beauty of Itsura. Why not immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery of Itsura while exploring its rich history and culture?
Take the Kitaibaraki City Loop Bus (community bus) from Ōtsu-minato Station on the JR Joban Line and get off at “Itsura.” The site is right there. (However, the bus is not in operation on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and during the year-end and New Year period (December 29 - January 3)).
It's about a 5-minute taxi ride.
About a 15-minute drive from the Kitaibaraki IC or Iwaki-Nakaminato IC on the Joban Expressway. The Rokkakudo and the Ibaraki University Itsura Museum of Art and Culture do not have parking lots, but there is a free city-run parking lot diagonally across the street. Show route
