INFO
The terraced rice fields are precious farmland (private property) where local farmers cultivate rice. When visiting, please observe proper etiquette: refrain from entering the rice paddies or walking on the irrigation paths, park only in designated areas, and take your trash with you. If our designated parking lot is full, please kindly seek alternative parking. The roads around the Shikamura terraced rice fields are narrow, and roadside parking inconveniences local farmers, residents, and other road users, so please refrain from doing so.
The Yotsumura Rice Terraces encompass four districts in Ohkura Village, Yamagata Prefecture: Toyamaki, Taki-no-sawa, Numa-no-dai, and Hirabayashi. Spanning approximately 120 hectares, these terraces are among the largest in Tohoku and are listed as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces, deeply intertwined with the lives of the locals for generations.
Located at a high altitude with significant temperature variations, rice cultivation here is challenging. However, nourished by the pure spring water from Mount Gassan and Mount Hayama, the region is known for producing delicious rice.
Spring brings the dazzling sight of water-filled paddies reflecting sunlight like mirrors. The rice planting season is vibrant with energy and the promise of life. Summer reveals lush green rice stalks swaying gently in the breeze, while autumn presents a golden harvest, a testament to the farmers' hard work. Winter transforms the scene into a serene, fantastical world blanketed in snow.
Yotsumura Rice Terraces offer stunning beauty throughout the year. The surrounding area also features onsen (hot springs) and nature trails for a relaxing experience.
Ohkura Village boasts many other sites showcasing its stunning natural beauty and rich history. Visit Yotsumura Rice Terraces and immerse yourself in the abundant nature and culture of Ohkura Village.
