Stroll through the streets of Omi merchants and experience the history and culture!
The Omihachiman Traditional Buildings Preservation District is a historic town originating from the castle town of Hachiman-yama Castle, built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu, and further developed by the thriving Omi merchants. Characterized by its grid-like street layout, it retains a landscape largely unchanged from the past. The Hachimanbori canal, in particular, serves as a beloved symbol of the town, and a leisurely boat ride offers a relaxing way to enjoy the charming townscape. The former Nishikawa family residence, designated as an Important Cultural Property, is known as a magnificent mansion of an Omi merchant, offering a glimpse into the lives of that era. Other highlights include Himure Hachiman Shrine with its beautiful garden, and cafes and restaurants housed in traditional Machiya (townhouses). The Omihachiman Traditional Buildings Preservation District is a place where you can touch history and culture and spend heartwarming time.
