A historic shaka-machi (priest's town) located right next to Kamigamo Shrine.
The Kamigamo Traditional Buildings Preservation District is a historic shaka-machi (priest's town) located right next to Kamigamo Shrine. Centered around Kamigamo Shrine, the tutelary deity of Heian-kyo, a gateway settlement was formed by priests (shashi and uji-bito) and farmers, and it developed as a residential area for priests from the Muromachi period. Along Myojin River, which flows from the shrine grounds, shaka (priests' residences) with unique gable ornaments stand side by side. Together with the earthen bridges, earthen walls, gates, and trees in the front yards, they preserve the historical townscape of the shaka-machi to this day. With a quiet and calm atmosphere, you can take a stroll while imagining the life of old Kyoto. Enjoy a walk imagining the life of old Kyoto.
