The Otsu City Sakamoto Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings is an area preserving the historic streetscape that thrived as a temple town for Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. Along both sides of the approach to Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine stand *ribo*, residences of monks from Mount Hiei, creating a unique townscape. These *ribo* were originally built as retirement homes for monks who had completed their training on Mount Hiei.
