Nestled in the heavy snow region at the foot of Mount Hakusan, Shiraoe district boasts a charming streetscape lined with traditional “Shiraoe-style” houses, unique to snowy regions.
Overview
Shiraoe is a peaceful village surrounded by mountains overlooking Mount Hakusan. It has a rich history of sericulture (silkworm raising) flourishing from the mid-Edo period, a tradition that continues to this day. The unique architectural style known as "Shiraoe-gata" (Shiraoe-style), adapted to the harsh natural environment of the heavy snow region, is evident in the houses lining the streets. Simply strolling through the old town will transport you back in time. Shiraoe also offers museums showcasing the history of sericulture, Shiraoe Onsen (hot springs), and more, allowing you to immerse yourself in history and culture while enjoying the abundant natural beauty. Shiraoe is also an ideal base for exploring Mount Hakusan and the Tetori Gorge, offering stunning scenery throughout the year.
