Overview

Kaga Higashitani is an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings located in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Traditional structures built from the Meiji period to the 1950s (Showa 30s) showcase the lifestyle and culture of the time. The main houses (shuya) in Kaga Higashitani feature a two-story gable roof with reddish-brown clay tiles and a chimney. The exterior walls are clad in cedar shiplap. The interior employs a unique Kaga-style layout known as "Kaga Type 1," with a sequence of entrance, earth floor (doma), living room, and finally a row of tatami rooms, storehouses, and a Buddhist altar. The pillars are painted with bengara (red ochre), and lacquer is used in the living room, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship. Kaga Higashitani preserves numerous structures and museums that showcase the region's former industries, such as charcoal making and forestry, allowing visitors to experience the lifestyle and culture of the past. Nestled in abundant nature, Kaga Higashitani offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Enjoy strolling through traditional buildings and scenery, savoring local specialties, and relaxing in nature.
